when using a 4m euro torch

Should be! Remember though that there is a liner inside the pipe that nearly fill it up so there is not a massive amount of space for the gas. Liner is aprox 4 mm outside dia and the bore of the pipe is aprox 5mm. Note that if left for a while the gas in the pipe will have some air mixed with it so a quick trigger and trim of wire ready for next weld. If you are using 0.6 wire then you may find it does not give quite such a good feed of the wire as a 3mt torch.

I myself purge and trim iff the torch is inactive for more than a couple of mins

You will find over a long period of not being used the gas in the torch will gradually seep out and a degree of mixing with atmospheric gases will occur, this is one of the reasons why the gas should start to flow before the arc is initiated when you pull the trigger, interesting question though, what's your reason for asking

thats one reason why I didnt use a euro torch conversion on my clarke welder,as it has the valve in the handle so you can purge the gas. my torch lead is still 1M longer than a standard clarke one though

thats what i thought ,
i have a 4m euro torch on my new welder, and thought it may be empty between welds...

Do you suffer from porosity when you start a new weld, if not, I wouldn't worry

I get the odd bit of porosity but only once every 50 welds or so. Hadn't really thought about the gas leaving the pipe... Although my welder does flow gas for a second before it welds. There's no way to adjust this time though.

There is no need to adjust the pre flow, think the occasional porosity you get Dan will be totally unrelated to this thread content
