Anybody watch it tonight? It was really good as they were working on a Datsun 240z. The bit I found interesting was the work on the cam shaft done by a specialist. The cam lobes were too worn to be re profiled so they were built up with the tig and then reground. I'm curious though as to what kind of rods are used for this. They called this process "hard welding". I've done this before myself on worn shafts (not cam shafts) but only used ordinary rods then re machined the part in the lathe.
So what rods would be used? I may need to get some

It's more commonly called hardfacing, consumables exist for all the common welding processes for example http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/consumables/hardfacing/Pages/hardfacing.aspx No idea what flavour they would've used, cam lobes need to 'match' the lifters in that if they're different hardnesses the softer one wears out quickly

I was once told its Stellite and that the lubrication takes care of the hardness difference........but its only heresay I never saw it for myself. It was a firm working on WRX Rally Cars..........cant recall their name but it could have been Ford...........I know, but Im getting on a bit

I don't get what pushrods have to do with anything, tappets/lifters are still used to impart a linear motion to the pushrod or valve. If anything i'd have thought pushrod engines are more sensitive due to their heavier valvetrains needing higher rate valve springs. Gutted I missed this episode. 240 is one of my would love to have had cars.

I think it was tempered afterwards. It was also trued.

I agree with you, really enjoy wheeler dealers but note most of the cars they "restore" are purchased in the south of the country (not much salt used on the roads!!!), don't think it would work for cars purchased up north.
However, the thing that really puzzles me is how they can say they've made a profit on the cars. Never any mention of the time put in & paying for it. I know they're supposed to be providing their time for free (or at least being paid by the TV company) but I still think their coatings are a bit unrealistic.

As are, I suspect their "buyers" who just have to be stooges employed for the show.

All these TV shows give incorrect estimates of profits. With not working Ive seen Homes under the Hammer and they forget Tax, maintenance and repair, Mortgage Fees etc etc.
My pet hate is "Grand Designs" not the programme but the budgets......... I actually like the programme and Kevin doo dah........

I found it a bit wierd truing the camshaft with something as agricultural as a pneumatic chisel

The budgets ect are ridiculous. Still a good show though with a good amount of technical content from Edd China. At least there is a chance of learning something rather then killing brain cells watching xfactor and all that dribble.

At the end of the day wheelers dealers gets a lot of criticism but in reality is the most likely resto car program that you might learn something from.

What a great car the Datsun 240z was by the way. Scary it was the same price as a MGB new, think that is what they said in the show.
