What's this tool?

Dad found it and gave it to me when he realised it wasn't a rivnut tool.

Close-up of the dingus end;

There's a hardened steel part with an angled slot in it which retracts into the body when the handle is squeezed, like so;

It doesn't seem to be for cutting anything, no relief angles and nowhere for the waste to go. Behind the hard bit there's a smaller brass part which can be pressed flat


The whole head can be rotated to any angle, or unscrewed, the case has a foam inlay with holes in it for more "ends" to be stored.

Back side of the head, big heavy spring inside it.

Any ideas?

Nope, no markings anywhere on it. The foam lined carry case would suggest it wasn't cheap too.

They're plastidip type covers and seem well stuck down, they're only coming off with a knife so I'll leave that for now.

Don't think so, the top of the notch doesn't meet the top of the body so there's no real shearing action, plus there's nowhere for the waste material to go.

Looking at the way the pokey out bit is angled in the 3rd pic, looks like ot has a slight rake on it...the right side appears to just go into the head while a gap to the left...

Looks like it's for doing a specific sized notch, the brass bit would allow the cutter section to operate smoother when it's being pushed back by the cutting action, hard spring would push the slug back out still in the cutter

Would it de-sheath a cable in the middle rather than at the end?

real long shot here ,,, does the foam pop out of the lid ,,, maybe the instructions for use could be behind it .

Really is a long shot , but worth a look.

Do the pins line up with the internal edge of the movable part? If so, it could trim a standard sized notch in the edge of a sheet. If it doesn't fully retract it sets an angled tab which could locate on a similarly cut piece.

If by cable you mean thin wire and by de-sheath you mean cut, then yes.

Yes they do, you'd have to squeeze it bloody hard to cut anything, here's the marks it made on a bit of annealed copper, it put similar but deeper marks on plastic too.

Is it possible that it is for forming staples?
Or "hog rings"?
Or some other wire form.
Rather than cutting, just bending?
