Im hoping someone will simply say "one of these" but im not having any luck. Off an old (1970s ish) american item.

From the style of fastener (I've forgotten the name), I'd say that it's an American thread.
Maybe a 10-24.

Its not a special fastener - its just got a shake washer on it. Normal pan head screw.

Check if a metric thread pitch gauge tooth fits in the thread
if so it's surely a SAE thread because they are both (SAE and Metric are 60°)
If not probably BSW (55°)
That's very important to determine the exact thread pitch and type.

The '24' in 10-24 is the tpi. Given that it is a 32tpi thread gauge in the picture, some other option from the UN-series (perhaps 8-32) might be better.

It's 32 tpi

But I can't match that to a thread that has a major diameter of just over 4mm

Yes, it's #8 x 32. Very typical in American made stuff.
I have a few in a tin. Do you need one or just trying to identify what you have?

The '24' in 10-24 is the tpi. Given that it is a 32tpi thread gauge in the picture, some other option from the UN-series (perhaps 8-32) might be better.

8/32 unf would seem about right.

Major diameter of 4.1656 mm, so it's close.

I was trying to work out what it was in order to buy some. I don't need loads but I need them in 1/2inch of thread.

Thank you for the offer but (and I don't know how they do it) the eBay sellers total price will probably be about the same as you or I could send them in the post for, so I may as well just go on eBay (assuming they are there!)

8/32 unf would seem about right.

8-32 is UNC.

#8 UNF is 36 tpi.

There is a company called modelfixings.co.uk who have a good range. EKP Supplies is another option.
