Its had a tab cast on the bottom of the frame the ally angle is just screwed on

Yeah it's a mini bench centre. Might be part of a balancing jig but my guess it's clock-making sized centres. They're a seldom-used but handy tool, I've got a chunky Jones & Shipman one. Last time I used it was when straightening some shafts from a quick-change gearbox.

Here's my more grown-up version. Sometimes I think about selling it under my 2-year rule but then sense tells me that I'll be sorry I did one day and I give it another pass. The guy I got it off said he'd never used it, but I have on occasion.

Thanks Pete so should I keep it??? give me a few jobs I could use it for? Winch boy thinks its great for holding stuff whilst he Tigs it!
Remember I struggled for years with very little so I do tend to keep stuff now I can afford it!

If you're in the habit of repairing small items it might come in handy. Put a shaft between the centres and turn it by hand and you can use a dial gauge to check the run-out. I wouldn't use it as a welding positioner unless you have some copper braid to hang on the shaft or you're likely to weld the centres into the centre-holes.

Like I said, it's one of those things you never use until you need it, then it's invaluable.

I don't think it is home made, the finish on the clamps and the base look like the standard finish on many measuring devices.

I dont think its home made, its a one piece casting, what you cant see under the ally angle is its a bit that looks like it can be clamped in the vice or fits another bit on.

You can use a ruler for that.
