Whats the point??

After my recent search for a flexible magnetic dial gauge holder/stand i need help understanding the need for a magnet with a 60KG pulling capacity....Now i have a decent set of gauges but each one of them is deffo not 60KG so why advertise this silly fact. Ime sure 10% of this pulling capacity on the magnet would still hold the gauges rock steady

It's maybe more about keeping them secure when there's clumsy feckers about? Thinking things like turning around to pick something up and clouting the stand or whatever it's attached to in the process and then having to try and catch the delicate dial gauge because the holder it's attached to is pants

I'll bet that's 60kg on a straight pull. Using leverage - e.g. a gentle push on the arm of the stand, it'll take a lot less than 60kg to move it.
If it's a vee bottom stand for flat and curved surfaces, you'll appreciate that grunty grip.

And when your trying to check the run out on something a bit ' unusual' which requires the stand to be held upside down only on half the base over a painted surface etc etc. it all adds up.

I often stick a gauge on the underside of the head slide on my mill.
When I tighten the knuckle the magnet seems more like 6kg of holding power than 60kg.

If they are mainly used on machine tools which are made out of cast iron which is less "magnetic" than steel.
It then needs a bit more pull to stick itself on.

My cheap ebay one is very weak when stuck to the boxford, it's ok ish when on the mill table, but through the paint on the lathe its a bit unstable.

i got a nice mag stand and dti gauge given 45 years ago.i knocked it off the lathe and bust the clock tother week they dont hang on well if its not a clean flat surface
