Whats the mild steel sheet with a preformed 90 deg fold called?

Hi Guys,

I've just bought a rusty Suzuki and need to do some repairs. I've borrowed migs of friends before but this truck need more than a few patches so I'm going to buy my own welder and do bits here and there. For the first patch I need a 90 bend but don't have a brake press. I can remember in the past using sheet sections with a built in 90 lip. What's it called? I've tried googling but at a loss.

I need to order my materials on line as work and family commitments mean I don't have time to visit physical suppliers.

Angle, but it's not formed from sheet, its extruded. You don't necessarily need a brake press to fold thin sheet sheet, it can be done quite satisfactorily with the edge of a bench some clamps and some wooden battens or blocks, angle iron or even a hammer and a block of wood.

I know you're short on time... but a lot of motorway discount shops keep repair panels... they're pretty handy and sound like just what you need

Thanks but I've defo had 1mm steel sheet in a 1 meter length before than had a 10mm or so lip all the way along it. Not sure where I got it though. Think a mate gave it to me. Perhaps he had it folded for him?

Yes I'm sure I can fold it over the edge of my work bench it need be. I'm not going to be anywhere near an invisible repair so I'll just bend/beta/form it to shape.

If you use a block of hardwood you can normally get a nice neat fold with minimal fuss.

Not heared the term Motorway discount shop but any shop that can order in panels / stocks panels usually have pressed angle and top hat sections on the shelf, try to get 'zintec' (zinc coated not galvanised, galvanised is difficult to weld) it will make a longer lasting repair.

if you don't need the bend to be sharp then I have used a b&d workmate to hold a sheet whilst I hammered it over, best to put a piece of wood on where you want it to fold and hit that instead of hitting the metal directly as it saves all the hammer shaped dents

or just clamp smaller pieces directly in the vice and hammer over
