What's Missing from this Micrometer?

Hi,

Thinking about buying this as it looks to be in lovely condition. Something is missing however, and I do not know what it is. Can anyone help me?

Do you mean the empty slot in the box?

Probably for the measuring standard (the micrometer should read zero when it's placed between the faces as a check when using it)

I do mean that slot, yes. It appears from other images that a sort of polo-mint shaped thing goes there so maybe it's what you said. Thanks (:

Its not missing guaranteed anyway, you could order them with or without standard and they come in the same box.
Generally in a larger org you'd order 50 mic's without and check them all against the one master standard in the metrology dept, rather than checking 50 mic's against 50 standards and having to keep all the standards in calibration and tracked, so M&W and others offered two options when ordering.
