You get a smoother arc in most cases due to the faster switching on an inverter. Good transformers in small cheap machines will be a thing of the past in the not too distant future. It's too expensive to get them past EC regulations for EMF and as the restrictions get tighter, more and more transformer sets will be dropped from manufacturers ranges to be replaced by clean efficient inverters. I head this from an industry insider for one of the biggest manufacturers in the game.

Buy your transformer plant now then! Seriously to me the inverter is smaller and when idle but plugged in it uses a lower amount of power than a transformer

A decent transformer is very smooth the equal of an inverter tougher and longer lasting - just turn it off rather than let it idle

Doesn't matter how good you make a transformer, it's a one trick pony and to make a good one uses a disproportionate amount of relatively expensive raw materials. It can only ever give the characteristic it was wound to have. An inverter output is so much more easy to tailor for multiple types of outputs to suit practically infinite numbers of job types. I'm not saying transformers will be gone for good, but they won't be so common is my guess. As inverters get cheaper to produce the figures just won't add up for the good old transformers of the past.

We don't make anything bigger than 300 amps in a Transformer now for exactly that reason.

High production costs due to the raw material, higher transport costs due to the weight and next to no profit margin due to the way the prices have been decimated over the years.

Kemppi was the first major manufacturer to go totally Inverter based and they won't be the last.

About 8 years or so back the two big brand names moved production to the eastern block and now even those machines have been drastically cheapened to try and claw some profit. As Jim says, It won't last
