I've got a milling machine & a dividing head & various cutters Georgie but I couldn't [or wouldn't]make one for that price, even milling a long length & parting off seperate gears it would take time, If I had a gear hobber & knocked 'em out by the score it would be o-k

Because in simple terms that is what somebody is willing to pay for it on the open market.

Wish I had a milling machine,I'd be cleaning up on ebay.

Subject to you having somewhere suitable to produce and store them:-
Work out the cost of purchasing the machine and setting up the programming / tooling, raw materials, labour, running costs, maintenance, overheads, tax on any profits, liability insurance, quality control, etc.
Then work out how many you would have to make and what cost you would need to sell them at before you would see a profit? I bet once you have done that your question would be how can they make and sell that spur gear for only £10.00

cleaning up on what the floor round there milling machine . i wouldnt even bother turning my machine on or get out of bed for that price . theres better things to make than a gear

OK, but would you be making a profit or a loss ? you could sell a million at 4 quid a pop but if they cost you £4.01 to make you lose it's as simple as that

From what I can see they charge £15 for delivery, makes it a bit dearer than the Ebay one.

It's like most pricing, very few big firms charge what they think an item is worth, they charge as much as they think the market will stand without loosing too many sales.

When I was 'making stuff' I got a bit too busy, so I doubled the price of one of my popular items, sales fell by about 40% but I made more money

If the first 15/20 units? paid for the materials and use of the electricity then anything afterwards is a sale bonus,my time is my own and not a buisness time remember.

But George as I said previously you have to account for purchasing the equipment etc and work out the exact cost of producing the item before you can determine what you can sell it for. You can't just say if the first so many units paid for the materials and use of electricity then anything afterwards is a sales bonus if you haven't worked out the exact cost of the materials and electricity you would use.

I'll give you credit though I am now debating the cost of producing an imaginery product with someone who doesn't even own a milling machine
