what will happen if i turn the air pressure up on my plasma

ive got a new r tech 40 amp plasma that is advertised as having a 16mm severance cut

if you go slow enough it will cut 22mm

i have a one off job cutting 25mm plate

if i turn the air pressure up from 50 psi to 60 will it cut thicker or just knacker the plasma

it wont cut thicker any way, it will blow the slag in to your shoes so if you like dancing i would advice it :P

when i was told to never weld in wellies i thought the bloke was having a laugh

maybe if you cut say 6mm deep off the plate on the back side with the 9" the on the front you would only have to penetrate 19ish mm ? would mean accurate marking to allaign back and front, not ideal but desperate men do desperate things

could i go from both sides with the plasma

im not worried about pinpoint accuracy as its only for some bobcat brackets so as long as both sides are the same angle it doesnt matter if the cut is messy

not realy because then your gauging with the first pass on the plasma and blowing slag up in to the air, as where if you cut 6 mm off the plate with the grinder that bring the 25 mm thick plate back to 19mm ish and the plasma should penetrate it though, its hard to cut a bend with a grinder doh. have you no oxy accetylene you could borrow

oxy acetylene is on the list as soon as i can find a low rent or rent free suppler of it

could borrow some but wanted to use my new toy

Just get it cut - would only be a few quid more than the material cost at a laser cutting place.

Failing that, I second what oilcooled said, unless your plasma has a gouging setting for the first pass (and you have the consumables to match)?

good point except the material is in a 500kg block and the nearest laser cutting place is about 35 miles away

i think borrow some oxy acetylene may be the way to go

just wondering if it could be done

If you have Oxy then use it. I have a 50amp plasma and it just severance cuts 7/8" and I only tried that out of interest on a small lump.

oxy propane will do for cutting... so saves on the acet bottle hire

if i had oxy id have used it by now

a 40 amp hypertherm will cut 30mm apparently

i think a lot depends on the design of the machine

bit like a 2 litre engine in 1 car will go a lot faster than a 2 litre engine in another car

i find that hard to believe unless the voltage is different or something but most of them things should be standard

i may have misread it but im sure a profi article tested out the hypertherm 40 amp model and said it would cut 30mm if you went slowly

ill have a look for the article if i remember
