Stereo microscope. Possibly a zoom one: Focus it using the rack and pinion knobs at the back and see if the magnification changes when you turn the large, silver, fluted knob under the main body.

It'll be for working underneath, I think it's a fixed focus, probably 25x magnification (10x eyepieces and 2.5x objective) and 150mm focal distance. Ideal for workshop inspection, soldering etc. Is there a manufacturer on it?

I have my hand I know my ends of my fingers are dry but make them look 10x worse

Really useful bits of kit.

Wouldn't be without mine - it's a low enough magnification to be useful (Typically dissection) but high enough to see exactly what's causing that red swelling in your finger after working with swarf

The left hand eye barrel is adjustable, so you can get both eye views in focus. The normal setting for the left barrel, if both eyes were equal, would be with the adjustment ring flush with the white line near the bottom of the barrel.

The microscope looks like it has a bespoke vertical shaft, or maybe a sleeve over it, to stop the scope sliding down too far, plus the rod coming out of the back might be for mounting something to do with the application it was last used for.

A good light on the subject is needed to make the most of it.

I bought it as as a design sort of thing looks nice as an ornament to be displayed with the addition of having a use in certain circumstances but the other half don't seam to think the same way

They've got a lot of uses and are quite common in a lot of fields from industrial stuff through science to healthcare. They give you a proper 3D view of what you're looking at (so you can make out the true shape of things and/or manipulate stuff more easily), generally have a wide field of view (so you can see stuff in context) and are less tiring to use than a 'normal' microscope of equivalent magnification.

A handy thing to have.

Try and find some dead flies or a spider to look at

I keep a stereo microscope on my computer desk, and have used it countless times; usually for doing minor surgery on myself removing splinters.
Edit: Adding a ring light, is a very worthwhile addition.

Yes, stereo microscopes are great for looking "at" objects and aquatic life you might find. For tiny transparent specimens on slides, a Compound or a Phase Contrast microscope with an X&Y mechanical stage would be best for ease of locating and viewing at and through things at higher magnifications.
