What to seal trailer skin to frame.

Hi guys,

Bought the alli sheets today and a load of alli angle for my trailer build.

I intend to rivet the sheet to the frame at 100mm centres, but was wondering what to use between the frame and the sheet as a waterproofing to stop any chemical weld and also to help stop any vibration of the alli.

Should I use just standard silicone, or am I better using some other specific solution?

Tiger glue would be my first choice

I would use a pu adhesive sealer like tigerseal or sikaflex. I use toolstations pu40 loads cheaper and just as good...

if you use tiger seal you don't need to rivet it that glue is what they stick car wings on with also the roofs of motorhomes

The toolstation one has been pretty good the few times i have used it....

Sika do one specially for bonding metals, even ally straight from the tube, Sika 221.
The sika gear is top notch.

Another vote for Sikaflex, although I suspect other brands out there may be as good.

Sika 221 for all the trailers I have built as well.
I’ve just had a ten year old one returned to be re-floored. It was galv sheet but had been left with grass clippings in it on and off for most of its life.
I just drilled a hole in the old floor sheet and lifted it with an chain block while heating it with a gas torch it peeled away nice and easy to be cleaned up and replaced with a new galv floor.
I make fire appliances as well and Sika is fine with alloy as well.

One small problem with PU is that it will pull in hot weather and leave witness marks as it will all be expanding at differing rates but i suspect on a trailer this wouldn't matter ?
If it does matter Fusor 127 or similair would be better as it hardens completely.

I secured the ally chequer plate sides tail board and floor with 6 mm pop rivets through mild steel . looking to strip it down some toime soon and get the old axle mounting plates replaces as they are almost rusted through . Then get the bare chassis galv'd
I like the idea of gluing the sheets of ally back in place once the re galv is done . As I'd have a bit of a job getting all the new pop rivets in place without having to " adjusting the holes ....of that I'm quite sure .
It's a good project for the trailer is a solid well manufactured self asembly thing from the mid 1960's .
Decent blind water proof rivets are quite expensive ..looks like I'll just have to check out the sikaflex prices.

Ive thought about if i ever have to reskin onto existing drilled holes as in your case pc welder. I found this idea on the net.

You can get glue on a roll. it.s used by signwriters
We call it agressive glue
Ya cant pass on any of the sika products also

I use sikaflex on mine and use it at work .cant really fault it
