Did a quick survey today for a build we are installing around existing walls. Light wasn’t too good to see the laser dot on the walls , so I asked client for a tape to check a few manually. First couple of dims were around 80mm different to the laser.
Soon found out why ….

Not the way it should

He was just clipping it on the edge of the column and pulling tape out. ( as you would normally do)
Wasn’t until I went to unhook it that I noticed

Those tapes come with a calibration certificate and an offsets correction chart, carefully mounted inside the lid of its felt-lined mahogany presentation box!!!

I bought a quality tape from a reputable toolshop. It must have been good because it said "Quality" on the tape body. The imperial measurement origin isn't too far off where it should be, but the metric scale origin was 346mm in from the end of the tape!!

A few years ago I was setting out a job we had , 9 houses on a site .
The contracts manager turned up to check that everything fitted as per the plan , he then went round the job shouting loudly that this was wrong / that wouldn't fit / it all wanted doing again !
When he finished and was telling me how bad my setting out was , I asked to look at the tape he was using .
It was the same as the one in the picture ! Also couldn't get him to understand about accumulated errors . The guy was a complete bell end from start to finish .
