My boy, aged 14 has just started at a Steiner school.
He has gotten into blacksmithing in a big way. First project, a poker. Done that. Fantastic, my boy got into something at school and talks to his folks about it. Result.
2nd project, a 'letter opener' half way done, letter dagger it looks more like.
The next project is a sheath knife! Proper one. I had a hideous one as a kid, plastic handle plastic sheath. I hated the thing. We all had them. Nobody ever got stabbed or cut, probably because they were so blunt. But also we knew what they were. These days it is unimaginable, a mob of 14/15 year olds carrying sheath knives............................ see knife rant in brew room if I remember.
Anyway. I is impressed that the teacher and school can see reality, these kids will make their knife thing, make the handle, and the sheath, sharpen it and temper it, and make something that they will treasure and understand. And never misuse. Who knows he might even give it to his Pa to treasure.
What steel should he use. I figure the school will use mild steel, y' never know. But what am I best supplying? I have heard of leaf springs, sounds dodgy, old power hacksaw blades? old files?? I have contacts who can supply this stuff. Dont I guys?
I want to know that 10 years down the line when the systems have collapsed he can look after his Ma and Pa. I see him as either a knife magnate with a zombie powered cadillac, or a psycho' lookin' after his own.
