Yo Hugh how's it going?
I need to port the inlet manifold, elbow and possibly throttle body on my Audi. Also going to attempt to do the inlet ports on the head in situ. I should add that the manifold is not straight ali, I think it's magnesium or an alloy.
Thanks for the input guys. From what I gather I need some flap wheels and carbide burrs more suited to ali, and cartridge rolls are too aggressive?
Chris Stevens - I've never had an issue with turning the speed down on my air die grinder. It's never stalled on me. And sod spending £3-400 on something I'll use once in a blue moon.
On anything other than a very old design head, spending time on a DIY port job isnt likely to make as much difference as a good 3 angle valve job, carefully blending the seats into the throats of the ports, and matching manifolds to head precisely.
A big mistake a lot of DIY types make is cutting away the part of the valve guide which protrudes into port, which means guide life is greatly reduced, and valve sealing compromised.
Increasing size of inlet valves is another thing which makes a fair amount of difference, and this in combination with blending the port into the seats and a good valve job will make a noticeable difference.
If you do decide to go ahead, then you will need some long series single or double cut carbide burrs, and a couple of shorter ones, and as you dont have much control over speed small flap wheels are better than cartridge rolls, but will mean things take quite a bit longer to do, than using cartridge rolls.
