What paper grade ?

What grade of wet and dry is used to flatten down a painted surface prior to being cleared ? Its not a metallic colour just plain black.

800, although you wouldn't normally clear over solid colour, you would use a black basecoat and go straight on after its kicked off with the clear.

You could of also gone wet on wet on the black with the clear.

The base is celly langy and imho a bit soft, I got some 2k lacquer to cover it and make it a bit tougher because its on the fork legs and covers on a bike. So you reckon flatten with 800 and clear it then ?

I have to ask if you have 2K clear why use Celly underneath ??? The problem you have is the 2K clear will be nice & hard but it gets its strength with the 2k underneath it, You will have a rigid outer with a softer coat underneath, not ideal in my opinion i'm afraid.

I wouldn't use anything coarser than 800 otherwise you will see the marks.

I didn't paint the parts langy, they were painted when i got them, but its a good finish but doesn't seem very tough, i don't want to waste a huge amount of effort stripping back to bare metal and starting again.

Yep grey would do the job, Personally I would block it out but maybe the OP doesn't want to go that far.

oh right , yes I am doing that at the moment.

I think anything over 1000 grit= adhesion problems
