what paint instead of hammerite

some frame i make at work have to be painted with black paint. so they got me 5ltrs of hammerite smooth.
imho its a tad expensive. any other decentish paints out there. mild steel btw

Most of our stuff is painted using air drying semi synthetic enamel.
Takes no more than a few hours to be dry, but hard over night.
Can get decent finish with it aswell if you take your time.

I tend to use Dacrylate products - enamels.
They do a QD3 primer and a gloss finish to go with it. Primer dry in 5 mins, top coat dry enough to pick up in 10 - 15 mins. Spraying that is.
The finish looks like it has been powdercoated.
I don't spary if it can be helped tho.

any ideas on price for all above. its just these frames are 50x50angle 1920mmmx920.. with 50x25channel in the centre so i would only get 2frames per can.

Ive been using paint called Rustoleum Matt Black stops rust comes in gloss can be brushed or rolled , works for me . easier to paint on than Hammerite !

i use the spray one for the hinges. very good stuff, bit expensive though. thts what i paint the frames with i we need them quick

Both Rustoleum and Hammerite can be thinned and sprayed on. Dont ask me the dilution rate i just recal it being mentioned in another thread. also someone said they used acetone to thin hammerite and it worked ?

cool. might give it a go. got some proper hammerite thinners.
will get a tim of that rustolium matt black and give it a go too

I thinned rustoleum with basecoat thinners. I was quite pleased with the finish and it seems farily durable.

I recently refurbed my gates, used Screwfix Smooth metal paint (black), thinned with quality cellulose thinners (about 10%), sprayed lovely, touch dry in about 5 mins through dry in about 24 hours. Gave them four couts, the look really good, very shiny. Needs no undercoat/primer.

I did check with the manufacturer (Kingstonian paints) about the thinners, they said good quality celly is the right stuff. supposd to be good for 5 years outdoors, time will tell.

coal tar epoxy is best but $ i used ace ruststop on outdoor fork truck cage cost 8.00$ quart thinned 15% with mineral spirits sprayed 2 coats. has held up to salt air at coastal boat yard 2years .we use coal tar epoxy exstensively where metal wil be submerged in salt water
