What paint can I apply Jotun 87 over...?

According to the instructions it can be used as a primer, middle or top coat. I'm looking to attend to the underside of the car, certain areas have a small amount of corrosion, others do not.

However to achieve a uniform finish I thought about spraying the whole underside, what I don't fancy is the removal of all the coating/paint that is there already there. Is Jotun specific, could there be problems if applied over certain paints?

goes over almost anything thats in good sound condition and is keyyed

going by your previous posts you will do anything to cut a corner and its already backfiring on you , if you want things right then strip it all bare and you know what youre dealing with

Firstly, nothing has backfired whatsoever. How on earth you come to such perculiar conclusions is beyond me.

Secondly, there's such a thing as coutesy. Regardless of your own personal thoughts, perhaps its best to keep these opinions to yourself.

Thirdly, a majority of the underside is sound. I see no point in removing the coating when unecessary.

Lastly and finishing on a good note thanks for the info regarding what the Jotun will adhere to

Hi Steveo, the beauty of Jotun is their products are tested and documented, so if the application guide says it's ok then it's ok. When I spoke with the Jotun specialist though, he said that the condition of the substrate is critical to the paint lasting.

I've just ordered my first batch of Jotun but not yet decided if I'm going to strip and paint the entire underside or just the areas that are failing.

With regards to the substrate condition may I ask what Jotun specified as usable?

One paint I think you can spry pretty much anything over is Epoxy Mastic, the 2 pack stuff. It can also be thinned down and sprayed. It encapsulates the steel and stops any rust forming. Good stuff but not cheap.

the backfires i mention are the painting over rust and it came back through , then refusing to listen when folk said the cleaned up pinholes needed fresh steel , then making up your own mixing ratios and moaning it hasnt gone hard

if its a keeper im thinking do it right and do it once

...and I speak as I find. If I had been aware that Hammerite was an insufficient product unsuitable for the job it was intended for, I would not have used it.

With regards to pinholed areas of steel, this has been discussed previously, and as stated it was deemed unnecessary to have the metal removed by a specialist in this genre of cars. According to the information received there is very little structural strength in the affected areas, and considering the thickness of the steel a complete repair wasn't required.

Lastly, the non standard mix ratio of paint and hardener was simply an experiment, scrap metal was used. I think it's quite plausible to assume that if more hardener was added to a product, the harder it would become. I realise now that this is not the case with Jotun. It's you interpretation that I was moaning, simply bewildered at first that the conclusion wasn't as I expected.

well as above then ....paint it over "whatever" and unknown paints /prep/previous bodges may come back to haunt you

strip it bare and you know exactly what you are dealing with

kinda depends if the car is a that'l do patch up or a show winning minter
