What not to do.....

I am posting this but reporting it to mods.
You will see why.

My concern is if people stumble across it like i did and have no idea why its unsafe.
I say that as it looks ingenious for certain things. To me at least....but i concluded there must be good reasons why its not safe.

If the mods feel they have to delete it thats fine. Or maybe move it.

Can't think of any reason why it is not less safe than the original setup. At first I thought he had reversed the motor direction and that certainly would have not been a good idea as the wheel nuts could have unwound. He has though just reversed the base so the motor still turns the same way so nuts will still tighten.
I think it would make grinding Tungstens much easier and probably safer.

Not going to do that on my grinder as it is a bit big but for a bench grinder it may be a good idea for Tig sharpening.

Another waste of youtube server space...... I glazed over within 15 seconds. Another expert that has no clue what he is talking about with grinding wheels and grits/bonding. I was tired and wanted to go to sleep anyway this just helped me along a bit. I love youtube and the planks it gives a platform too. Nothing massively dangerous going on there, just a waste of space video. That said, there is a lot of highly dangerous vids out there where homer machinists and know it all youtube machinists think they know what they are doing.... the sad thing is other see it and think its correct, so play follow the leader.

Well I agree with a lot you say and I never even watched the video as the first few seconds of him waffling was enough to put me off. I was however worried that he had reversed the motors rotation so I scanned through to see the bit where he was messing around with screwdrivers and saw he had rotated the base so felt relieved about that.

Looks good to me for sharpening knives, chisels and so forth, can't see any downsides to it if all he did was move the guards around. If you were to remove say the rough edges on a piece of oxy'd cut steel then the traditional setup would be best as the work is pressed into the little table support in front of the wheel. But for knives ect I'd say good on him for thinking out of the box!

I also don't see anything that is more dangerous than using it the normal way. One thing worthy of note is that he says it all wrong to sharpen a knife with edge pointing against the rotation. It's not, I have a Tormek grinder which cost a fortune and that is designed to work both ways. Sure it's water cooled and a much higher spec machine but there is no issue grinding against the edge it just take material off quicker.

stupid git I was always taught sharpen a blade or chisel with the face of wheel grinding down on to the blade cutting edge and not sharpening blades facing down over from the back

You can do it either way.
Going against the rotation as said is better for eliminating the point or edge from rolling over and you also get a flatter face.
But there is always the risk of going in too steep and having the wheel snatch at the job particularly if it’s too course.
Going with the direction as he has done does eliminate the possibility of a snatch going in at much steeper angles but I’ve always found it tends to radius the grind slightly. I would always sharpen a drill bit against it rather than going with it as I get a much better edge. I don’t think what he’s done is doing any harm from a safety POV despite it being frowned upon to change or modify a machine. As sea dog has rightly shown it’s common practice to sharpen and grind in either direction on different designed machines
