finally got rest of bits for my southbend but we couldn't find the motor anywhere.
where is best place to get a motor i can use that i can run in reverse as well?
have got spare 1/2hp motor from drill press, but clarke lathe uses 3/4hp motor.
assume i will need at least the same size if not 1hp motor as sb is slightly bigger.

1hp will be fine but then theres what frame size,2 or 4 pole,motor shaft diameter that then determins pully inside diameter

2 pole or 4 pole?
whatever shaftsize will need to make adaptor to sb pulley.
machine mart do a 1hp 4 pole that runs at 1500 rpm the 2 pole runs at 3000 rpm which i would imagine will be way to fast.

1525 is the norm speed buddy for a lathe and try find the original pully size for that machine (outside diam) so all your gear feeds fall in line with the charts...iff you buy at machine mart then they have pullys to match there shaft sizes and proberly the outside size you need too..99.9% iff not all there motors are reversable too .Dont forget the pic addicts here including me

not std pulley's are flat and 1.25 inch wide, and 3 steps only on pulley i have as 1 step missing.
centre hole of pulley is 34mm.
am thinking of using this set up and then mating up to std step pulley on motor.
all needs cleaning up.
am i better going for 2 pole at 3000 rpm?

no way mate with a flat pully...go for the 1500

to work out the pully speeds its...motor rpm x motor pully diameter divided by driven pully diameter to give you the final speed.

a half or a 3/4hp motor will do everything u want to do on that lathe
