What metalic paint system can I spray myself?

I'm not asking if it's a good idea, sensible or economical....

Having read a lot and become increasingly confused... what paint system can I reasonably have a go at painting myself *without* investing in air fed resporators et al? A carbon mask and some half decent ventilation is what I am thinking. It would be a metalic to make it more interesting.

It would be for an 80's "modern classic" car that's not hugely valuable and my prep time is cheap (to me).

Metalic is an art on its own. YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Welcome to the world of tiger stripes.

Is there some other way to find out without having a go? Like most skills, everybody who knows what they are doing didn't at one point.

Without a proper air fed system (its more than just the mask) you are limited to 1k paints/ those without an isocyanurate catalyst....and you still need reasonable precautions against fumes etc

The metallic is just the colour coat. Is there a non isocyanate clearcoat that could go on top?
I didn't have any issues with tiger stripes but I find it difficult to get an even clearcoat finish in lacquer/clearcoat or any glossy finish.

Well... this is the question. Assuming that I'm going to do some practicing and swearing on a scrap panel can anybody recommend something with a name that I can go and buy?

I appreciate that I cannot spray 2K paints and that I'm looking at needing a clearcoat too. In fact, there's probably lots more questions about primer and stuff. But you know how it is... you want 10 different YouTube videos and get 10 different opinions. I'm here because I've always got reasonably sensible advice.

Base coat is mostly polyester and thinned with 2K thinner, or water based and thinned with distilled water.
There is no hardener or real nasties so you can spray it with a decent carbon respirator.
You can then apply a one coat clear lacquer (1K) which is also iso free.
It will not last as well as 2k but it will be fine for trying it out.

Solvent based base coat is easy ot spray, as long as you are not trying to match it, the real skill is in the lacquer.
Water based is trickier without good air movement.
A decent gun makes a huge difference too.

Another option is cellulose - assuming you can find a paint factor that will sell it to you.

You can get celly clear as well we used to mix clear with last coat & flat back with 1200 for that glass finish if required
Acrylic was another nice material fast drying as well

thats what id reccomend if unable to use 2k.....be aware it wont hold up nothing like 2k /modern car paint ....petrol will take it off , it will dull over time etc

buy a clone of the DeVilbiss GTI PRO Lite, single pack filler primer, water based basecoat and 1k lacquer. a decent half mask and a lot of consumables and you'll get a passable finish...

which will go dull in a couple of years.

there's no substitute for 2k primer and lacquer, and yes, you can get non-isocyanate versions of both, but I've heard it never goes properly hard.

You used to be able to get direct gloss metalic celly (ie no clear needed).I did my first respray of a scooter in it.Prepped it beforehand, drove to work, stripped some parts off it, painted it, put the parts back on and drove it home same day. I don't know if its still available as it was 32 years ago.
