what ladder?

so far i have a triple extension (3.5-8) and an extending roof ladder (3.5-6).

use them quite often and couldn't be without them, but have started thinking i might need another.

what ladder would i need to be able to get to soffits/facias or gutters that are above a full length conservatory or extension?

as a trial i extended my triple out as far as needed and put it up over the conservatory at my grandmothers house so it just cleared the edge of the conservatory roof but it was far to shallow an angle to even consider it being safe to use.

any suggestions?

i have 3 sets of ladders from small to large as well as a scaffold tower. as u have tried none will be any good over a conservatory u need the scaffold tower either end and long batten boards to cross it if the customer wants jobs doing they have to pay the price and hire one .why chance doing a balancing act fall off and go through one hurt yourself and have to pay for the damage just to save the punter a few quid

get scaffolding put up and punter pays .u do the work get paid job done . ive done all the circus aerial acts and fell of a few roofs over 40 years and luckily im still here in one piece .quite a lot arent

No you dont put the scaffolding up the scaffolding firm comes round and does it
when finished they come and remove it
customer pays you get to live another day

My mate does fascias and guttering for a living, he makes it clear to the customer of any poor access job they are responsible for arranging the scaffolding (he provides 2 or 3 local firms details), once up he does the job and walks away happy, the customer pays the scaffolding firm.

It eliminates him from any liability of unsafe scaffolding, kids getting access etc.

It's the only way to work really, especially in todays sue and claim culture

We had to do a ladder safety course recently and they said if it's a one handed job or inspection work a ladder is the way! Anything else and it's a tower, scaffold or cherry picker!

We have a firm we use regularly we give the customer their number and they sort it out! they are spot on lads and we get a bit of a discount if we need some ourselves as we give them lots jobs everyone is a winner

But after the third job when your wishes have run out what do you do then ? I saw a builder recently doing soffit and guttering work and he had two ladders with a staging suspended between them. It looked precarious but seemed to work well enough.

I have seen a guy cleaning gutters with a ladder that bent in the middle so went up and over the conservatory and rested on the roof of the house. It looked very unstable and he didn't look very confident on it. That is what sparked this thread really, I wanted to see if that really was the way to do it or is a ladder the wrong way to go about it.

there called ladder cripples and were banned of sites years ago . i wonder why

I think how you approach work and what you will do to earn a wage and please customers changes with age.

When I was younger if I was asked to do some roof work I would have probably said... we can use something there and get a ladder tied to that pipe and then make a hook to hang on to and if we slip aim for the lawn and not the patio..it's softer.

As you get older you tend to say sod that, you need full professional scaffolding before I risk my life for a few quid.

Your attitude changes because as you get older you don't bounce, you snap, you also care less about telling customers straight that their penny pinching is not your problem and you don't feel obliged to sort someone else's problem out for them or even upsetting them by refusing the work.

When younger I certainly did work I did not really want to because it was a friend of a friend/relative scenario, coming across as I would be doing them a big favour, saving them a fortune or other reason that made me feel sort of obliged not to refuse their begging.

You have memory's of those jobs you took a risk doing and thankful you survived.

Self preservation certainly kicks in with age in my opinion.

the days are gone of the customer telling u how to do your job and want it the cheapest way .then make u wait for your cash and go begging cap in hand for it .you tell them the terms and conditions nowdays or they get some other mug to do it
