What is this ?

Another of those what is this threads, This is not mine someone just sent me pics and asked if i knew what it might be, to me it looks like some kind of old device from a science lab, if you turn the dial on the out side of the cabinet the metal rods with hooked ends inside go up and down. The last picture is of something that was next to it so may or may

not be part of it.

The case is a cover for the scales.
The scales are very sensitive and even you breathing near them prevents them from settings to an accurate measurement.

I was looking at scales like this a few months back...I was wondering whether they would be accurate enough to balance a turbo shaft?

The plan I had was the balance the turbo shaft on the scales...any imbalance would show as imbalance on the scales. I didn't do the calc to work out what sensitivity the scales would need....but did spend a few hours looking at antique scales like this one for the project ....might work with some fiddling I think

I think you'd want it balanced rotationally ?

Balance is balance sort of....if the shaft sits perpendicular to the scale pivot point...as you rotate the shaft any imbalance would be picked up by the scale as the "heavy spots" would move away/towards the pivot if you balance the scale before turning the shaft.

Was a neat idea....but the scale would have to be super sensitive to pick up such a small variation I think.

A bit like a seesaw...if you change the position of where you sit you shift the balance.
