What is this tool for? (Pic)

In 2010 I bought a second hand drill press, and this tool came with it. That does not mean that the tool is definitely for the dill press. I’m curious to know what it is for.

a taper drift for -taking drills or chucks out of a taper sleeve put it in the slot and tap sleeve out with a hammer

Ah right.Cheers. When a tapered chuck or drill is inserted, what holds it secure other than the tapered shape? I mean, you cannot afford to have one of them flying out of the machine at speed.

Any taper less than 7 degrees is deemed self-holding.

Just that, the taper; Morse tapers are fine enough to hold themselves in without a drawbar provided the taper and socket are in reasonable nick.

Make sure the morse taper chucks/drills etc are free from any lumps or bumps and do NOT oil the taper, You will notice that the tapered drift has a flat edge and a rounded edge, The flat edge goes towards the item being ejected,
