What is this Symbol?

Looking at floorplans of houses I keep seeing a symbol consisting of a square with diagonals thus:



What does it mean?

It shows there is a void above the floor level the particular detail refers to. The void would be through the floor above, or the roof whichever is applicable.

That makes sense, they usually appear in upstairs rooms. Would they mark the position of access hatches?

Just looking at the moment, trying to get the feel for a few areas for when I retire in a couple of years.

Possibly access hatches, or more likely rooflights. By rights it should be labelled to tell you what it is.

In ducting, it shows a vertical duct, usually between floors, so I would think that an access hatch in the ceiling could be the case too. A penetration in the ceiling.

I bought them off Ebay, they were unwanted Christmas presents and the seller hadn't even bothered to open them!
