What is this old rusty 8 inch pin thing?

Tapered shaft with some sort of key wedged in dug up in a garden by someone on another forum. I'm baffled but it looks interesting. You guys are better at this than me.

Does look a bit like the screw box from a post leg vice. Is it hollow? There would be an acme thread inside if it was off a vice.

no mate..the Gems used Jap engines and the taper was right handed
