What is the best PSI for cellulose topcoat

Back again

I have finally primmed and wet sanded the whole car down,its super smooth.
Now i`m about to spray on the the color .
I was wondering what is the best psi needed to apply cellulose,and to avoid orange peel,also how many coats do i apply.


My compressor is a
CLARKE PEV11C50 AIR COMPRESSOR
# 9 cfm displacement, single cast iron cylinder.
# 50 ltr air receiver tank (CE certified)
# 2 hp, 110v, single phase motor
# 10.5 Bar (150psi) maximum working pressure controlled by a fully automatic pressure switch.

I have an air regulator fitted to the end of the gun to give the wright reading.

Here, have this piece of string to measure!
Using an HVLP gun I have always used around 40psi and it works nicely for me. I also used 40psi with a conventional gun.
As for how many coats, the more the better really. I would suggest you will need at least 3 or 4 coats. You need to build up a decent thickness of paint so that you can flat and polish.

I generally use between 40-60 psi.

My best advice is to play around with a test board and find the settings you are most comfortable with.


with celly you are best applying many thin coats, don't spray with the nozzle too far from the work as it can cause the paint to dry in flight, spray each coat within 15 minutes of the previous one flashing off.

if its hvlp 2 bar(30psi) is the golden rule if its conventional then around 45-50,if your not using a gun mounted air regulator it might be worth investing in one,although if you conect the gun an pull the trigger fully an set the gauge to 30psi on the compressor regulator ,when u let of the trigger the gauge will shoot up but when ever u spray it should drop down to 30 psi.
