What gun

I've got a 42CFM compressor with 200L tank and a dryer.

now we need a decent gun. These Clarke ones are so hit and miss.

I always see Devilbiss being recommended on here, HVLP.

can anyone recommend one? I'd like to spray zinc primer and paragon enamel nicely.

If it could also do some jotamastic then brilliant.

budget. £100-200

Must be able to get spares etc.

Max fluid tip is 1.2 though, might not be large enough for you. Great finish though.

I don't see the point of an expensive gun for spraying heavy paints. For bodywork sure, but not for general use.

My answer would be, any gun with a pressure feed! Whether it be air assist, pressure pot, airless, whatever...
I'd set the Wagner airless up for painting even 3 litres now, it's so much faster than gravity feed and cleaner too. I use about 2l fresh solvent each time for a full clean out, after a run through with dirty solvent, but it doesn't need that every time.

I have a devilbis gun. Whilst parts to alter the setup are availible, they are so expensive that it makes you just consider buying another gun.

The F160 would be a much better fit as it has the full choice of 1.0 to 2.5mm.

If you have the R160, your aware that the nozzle can be modified up to 1.7mm? I used a gf3 nozzle for it, for primer.

I'd totally understand if you were using thin 2pack or lacquer, as the gun can make all the difference there...

But you could have the best Devilbiss/ANI they make, if you have a tiny fluid tip and paint that's too thick it'll make a worse job than a coarse Sealey with a big fluid tip. That's just a fact. It'll dribble out and the air will blat it on in chunks rather than atomising it. You'll coat something no bother, but it will be slow and not a great finish, and you'll wonder why you wasted your cash.

I'd use a 1.8 fluid tip as a minimum for zinc primers, and that's usually pretty easy to spray... alkyd paints and enamels are usually thicker. I've only got up to a 2.0 tip and was wanting bigger...

you end up having to thin stuff down loads just to get it to flow, and then it's runny and you can't put decent thicknesses down.

That's my experience anyway.

To be fair £80-£100 is a nice price point for a decent gun you can look after, that F160 looks ideal as long as you get a few fluid tip sizes for it. I'd want a 1.9 and a 2.5, at least.

To be fair £80-£100 is a nice price point for a decent gun you can look after, that F160 looks ideal as long as you get a few fluid tip sizes for it. I'd want a 1.9 and a 2.5, at least.

£50 for a tip set is not bad but you wouldnt want to buy the full set.
A big advantage is the budget version uses the same casting and threads, for £13 a tip set, and still gets good reviews.
So, buy gun with 1.3mm for finishing/clear coat, then buy 1.7 and 2.5mm as the budget tip sets for thick paints and primer.

For primers I use a £20 gun and still get a good finish. Perhaps play with the input pressure and flow a bit more and see if you can set it to suit your style and the paint.

For top coats I use a gti pro lite and get a lovely finish but I wouldn't put primer anywhere near it let alone through it.

I've posted this pic a couple of times in the last few weeks but I've just done this with a fastmover lvlp gun with a 1.4 nozzle.2k not enamel. Probably can't get spares but at £40ish per gun you could buy a few for your money.

Check on the tds for the paint, usually the manufacturer gives a recommendation of fluid nozzle size and air pressure for application etc
