Hi ,I am about to do some welding on my Mk7 Transit. However before I get the grinder out to see how bad things are can some one please explain to me what gauge metal I should go and buy. I need to do some work on the sills and rear wheel arches although due to small amounts of rust I dont want to buy complete repair panels. I still work in feet and inches lol but I think you buy metal in gauges and this is where I'm stuck.

20g would be easiest to work, 18g a bit thicker to weld. I'd go for the 20g if you are confident your welder will cope with low amps. 20g is about 1mm, 18g 1.2mm.

I'd agree with the above - I've been doing chassis rails and so on in 18swg (1.2mm), and the rest in 20swg (1.0mm). But another option would be that when you cut out the bad part, measure the thickness of the remaining steel and use the same as that.
