What Gas?

Probably a silly question but what gas would be best as a multipurpose shielding gas for tig?
Only got BOC over here and had a look at their data sheets but would pure argon cover all eventualities? (mostly mild steel but would like to do aluminium in the future, funds allowing)

pure argon, can TIG, mild steel, ally and stainless, perhaps not perfectly in the case of ally and stainless, but good enough to get away with it

I've bought (if it ever arrives!!!!!) a cheapo 160A job off ebay to play with. Didn't want to spend a lot to find I was wasting money.
If I find it's useful I'll invest in a decent AC/DC squarewave job. (no I don't need it but I have a tool fetish)
Tried scratch start with my IFL inverter and really enjoyed it for the 5 mins the gas lasted!!
