What gas should I go for?

Hi, Im new to welding and just wondering what gas to go with.. I will mainly just be doing diy / odd hobby jobs, nothing industrial / large scale

I was looking at Co2 / Argon mix (5 and 15%) and Co2

Im guessing realy Co2 / Argon mix is the best to go with but what percentage mix out of the 5 and 15 % ?


Is there a big difference with Co2 and Co2 / Argon welds if I was to just go Co2?

Straight CO2 works fine but has a wider penetration, so it is a bit more difficult on thin metal. IT is a lot cheaper for home use.

5-7% mizes are usually tri-mixes (Argoshield light, Cougar X etc. Ar/CO2/O2) 15-25% are argon/CO2 mixes. The 5% trimix is about the same as the 15-20% Ar/CO2 mixes.

Use what your gas supplier has and recommends.

well my gas supplier has 5% Co2 / Argon and 15% Co2 / Argon

Its £55+ Vat for the bottle deposit (£40 back when you want to end it and return bottle)

and £27+Vat a refill for either the 5% or 15%

I might have a look around for a cheap Co2 Supplier in Carlisle first (if I can get a bottle), If not I will go Co2 / Argon mix from them.

but I thought £55+ Vat for the bottle and £27+ Vat wasnt too bad considering you get £40 back when you dont want to continue any more.

Yes m8 a place called fossegas in Leicester, fantastic chap whom even operates out of hours and weekends. Big plus for me even if it is slightly more.
