Hi everyone. I am new to welding and am looking to buy a welder. I've read through most of the welding guide, lots of good info. The welders I'm looking at have a "Maximum open circuit voltage" rating. The few I've looked at are around 36 volts. Can anyone explain this? Thanks

that's the voltage before you strike the arc. the higher the voltage the easier the rod strikes

Higher voltage will also help maintain the arc. Some rods require a higher voltage. If run on a lower voltage, they tend to loose the arc and you have to re-strike them.
36V is low unless it is MIG. On most MIG's, the OCV and the welding voltage will tend to be closer on better MIGs as there is less voltage drop from power loss (and this higher duty cycle.)

open circuit voltage(OCV) is the voltage measured without flow of welding current.
main purpose of ocv is to initiate the arc, and also it shall not exceed 90v to avoid electrical shock.it may vary depends upon the welding process used.
