When I took the parents trusty old Accord to the local scrappie a few weeks ago I noticed to one side of the office he had at least half a dozen anvils, three quarter to full size jobs and I certainly fancy one.

He looked at the car, nice friendly guy and offered a good price and the deal was done, after I got my cash I simply said ' see the anvils mate, how much for one'

All I got was ' too expensive..too expensive' and he walked away before I could reply really.

It left me a little baffled, with the feeling that any conversation regarding me buying one was over and not worth continuing, even though I had just been given over £200 in notes, so he knew I had money in my pocket.

I was not expecting them to be cheap, Ebay one's often fetching between £70 and £150, but not something the postie is too happy to pop through the letterbox.

I intend to return next week but need to be prepared...So

Why do you think his attitude was as it was?

He is obviously not scrapping them, so what is happening to them?

What would you offer without him thinking he has another idiot here.

I have a figure in mind but will wait to see what you all think.

I don't think anyone will be able to tell you why he has a bad attitude. Perhaps he is fed up with people trying to buy them for peanuts, but that doesn't excuse being rude.

Without seeing them and giving them a tap no-one can tell you what they're worth either.

Anvils are pretty common in the UK. Unless you're a full time smith I wouldn't go spending much. I have a 5 cwt that was 100 quid in decent condition and a 1.5 cwt that I bought unused for 200. Both good quality.

Make sure you know how they're made and that you know how to test the faces and get a general idea of the quality. Get the biggest you can. Do spend too much.

Cheers Al......Yes I also suspected he had been pestered by the £20 brigade, he was not rude as such..just totally not interested I think.

My suspicion is they are saved for the reclamation guys, they could fetch £200 eaily to sit in someones garden in the right area of the UK I suppose.

Yup maybe - often come up as garden ornaments on ebay. Never 'got it' myself, but each to their own.

I also know of guys up your way who collect them up and ship them to the states in containers, so maybe they just tell all the local scrappers to put any aside for them?

If they have a huge double-bick anvil, take a pic and let me know...

No problem Al.. will take a pic on my phone and if he is a bit more receptive find out what he does with them and the cost if selling.

I bought a 1cwt anvil on freeads for £20 last year. I had to go 60 miles to fetch it but it was well worth the trip.

Sounds a good bargain, think a few miles is going to be my option, not having a massive work area I can't have a heavy table so an anvil provides a good hammering base

being a frequent flyer in scrappy's ive never met an owner yet thats civil...i have my own conlusion about them and that being that anyone cashing in scrap has no and must be despreado for cash and they put us in the same bracket as a smackhead pushing a wheelbarrow in with 2 lengths of ally gutter...go back in and get the wad out to put the misirable old git in a fresher frame of mind before the haggling starts

Laughing here...the very day I took the car in to scrap a hoodie was wheeling a barrow full of house wire in.
