What do you think of this tig welder?

Well i dont exactly have the money to get a real good tig but for 170quid it seems there is a catch?

Now is it gas? if so do i need one of them big tanks? also has anyone used one before?and does it come with the TIG torch?

im going to be using it for alu mostly. i dont really need a superb looking weld just something that is good and strong! Im not interested in using the MMA on the machine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Nathan,

Its a DC only machine, so would be of no use to you for Tig welding Aluminium..........for this you need to look for a AC/DC machine.

That one will do AC and DC. I know nothing about that particular machine except it's Chinese. Makes me a bit suspicious that they always seem to go for less than the -- on the face of it -- similar Rehmann boxes (which have a longer guarantee).

For anything serious you need a big bottle (pure Argon for almost all TIG): although you generally flow a little less gas with TIG than MIG for the same kind of work, it's much slower work. A disposable might give you only 10" of weld. :O

Those units generally come with little in the way of cups/collets/tungstens and without a reg and flowmeter, so budget for those, too.

Generally you rent or pay a deposit on bottles.

The big players are Air Liquide (aka Linde Gas, aka BOC) and Air Products. You need to find your local depot and open an account. Of these two, Air Liquide are cheapest on rental as a rule.

Lots of smaller players out there too. Some with cheaper rentals, some with deposit schemes.

There's a really big thread on here (use the search engine) and -- I think -- an Air Products contact, too. All you do, once the account is sorted, is swap empty bottles for full ones.
