As a bit of an aside I thought I'd try and do a 90 degree joint - welding from the outside. I need to add a small flange so this is practice for something I need to do if it's at all possible. I also wanted a change from all the butt joints I'd been trying. Again all the welds I'd done looked pretty much the same in the gloom of the garage. In the kitchen cup of tea in hand noticed and area of an inch was much less high a weld - in fact close to flush with a lot of penetration on the back. To my eyes this part of the weld looked considerably better. Trouble is I don't know what I did differently. I don't think I changed any settings so it must have been in my technique. Hope the pictures show it. In the picture from directly above the weld looks identical along its length - to my eyes that is!
Sounds daft but I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me why the difference - I thought I'd done it all the same yet the difference in the centre area is dramatic.
1st picture from the top of the corner
2nd picture - across the surface to show weld side-on hopefully showing the weld area in the middle much less high and virtually flush with surface.
3rd picture - from above the surface I directed the weld at.
4th picture showing back of joint.
