as title says really what spec ally do you guys use in welded constructions. 6061 t4 equivalent in commercial spec??

One of the softer flavours that'll crumple a lot more than a 6xxx series without splitting should the worst happen. 3103 is an ideal choice, 1050 nearly as good. The 5xxx series are fairly popular choices for fuel tanks but they work harden relatively quickly which can cause fatigue issues with simple flat sided tanks as fuel sloshing about flexes the skin hence my preference for 1050 or 3103 which is also easier to shape- stiffness through geometry and all that. I weld 'em with 1050 wire except for any machined fittings & vent/filler tubes etc which are typically 6082 and 6063 respectively so welded into the tank with 4043
Overkill for automotive stuff but an interesting read about fatigue of aircraft tanks http://www.seqair.com/skunkworks/FuelSystem/Problems/Problems.html I don't think a flavour is mentioned but i suspect probably 5052 (UK equivilant that's commonly available is 5251). Even more off topic but for anyone that's interested here's one about fatigue testing of Concorde fuel tanks http://naca.central.cranfield.ac.uk/reports/arc/cp/1365.pdf made from a Rolls-Royce developed hiduminium alloy
Here's one on OEM automotive aluminium fuel system bits http://www.alueurope.eu/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/AAM-Applications-Power-train-5-Fuel-System.pdf their choice is 5754-O which i've never seen available as sheet, only 5 bar treadplate which isn't in the annealed condition
