What brand HSS blanks for lathe tools?

I don't like no-brand anything so what's a decent HSS to make some basic turning tools, I see some NOS Eclipse H3 & H5 kicking around eBay?

Take a trip over to this place in Sidcup and you'll find boxes of it to rifle through. Most will be good quality brands that has been bought as part of job-lot clearances.

why just carbide tools ?i manly use hss tools and sharpen them myself on a grinder and rub them up on an oilstone

I do quite a lot of apprentice-ee bits and pieces making my own lathe tools and in a predominantly CNC lathe and mill machine shop then used tips are a plenty!!

Just cut some 11 TPI whitworth form threads today,-- good job I had HSS to grind to 55 degrees, internal and external, I have a good selection of TC but not much use for todays project,
HSS cheap as chips on markets, bide ya time and keep your eyes open. I use 1/4 X 1/4 HSS in J&S holders a lot. + I tend to buy almost any size I see as its always cheap.

Thanks Pete, I popped down there last month to have a look at some slip rolls. Nice guys, they ask top money but seem to be open to deals. I went on the motorbike so I wouldn't buy anything too heavy

So any brand recommendations or is it much a muchness?

a lot of what I find in the NE is Eclipse, a bit Dormer stuff,never a prob for me.When it blunts I grind or stone

I only ever bought stellite as I have a pile of HSS but if you stick to named stuff like that mo-max you'll do ok.

Hello 13 IP,

although it's a bit of an outlay, I've gone over to carbide inserts for general turning, boring and parting off. After years of sharpening HSS, I wouldn't go back. Parting off especially is much better with the carbide tip ones.

Thank you for the recommendations chaps, bought some Momax cheap.

Piman, my lathe is quite old, top rpm is around 1500, I've done a fair bit of reading about inserts and their rakes etc but I found general consensus was they like speed and rigidity to work best, what lathe are you using? I presume top brand inserts are the way to go too?!

The ones purposely bought have had a decent cobalt content.
Cant beat proper interchangeable tipped tools but dont skimp on cheapies, fondness for Iscar, Kennametal, Arno, Ceratizit and Seco.

I've got my eye on a Seco RH with inserts so I'll see how that pans out, I nearly bought a Glanze set but did a search on here first

I use any brand i can find cheap. Cleavland, Rex i look for but i even have some china that work well...Bob
