Hi all
I was thinking about getting a smallish band saw 6x4 that sort of size
I was just interested in what you guys use and whats the best make
Thanks david
The 6x4 ones used to be all pretty much the same machines with maybe the odd subtle difference. Every swivel vice one I've seen uses the same basic castings for the base and bow. I have one made by Pennine Tools which has a 370w motor. This one is different, it's a swivel head one rather than a swivel vice one meaning you don't have to drag the saw about when you want to change angles if you're cutting long lengths, it has a 550w motor and is a good price too! Blade quality is a real consideration though, cheapo carbon steel blades are absolute rubbish, they wear out in no time and break regularly, spend good money on bi-metal ones, they're not actually that dear, last ages and are far more likely to cut straight. I get my blades from Dragon Saws.
I just ordered one of them swivel heaD saws. I've had one at work for a year and they are brilliant.
It took me six months to figure out the blade quality thing though! Got BM42 blades now and it is transformed.
I just run it at top speed, and away it goes. The new one is for my home workshop.
I replaced a couple of the crappy plastic knobs with decent items as they fell apart. Usual story, nice metal but poor fittings. Still an excellent machine though.
At one time i had 3 4x6 saws running production with each saw cutting close to 1,000 pcs a day. They are great little saws that sure beat a hacksaw when you don't have one. I have a yahoo group with some different cuts i have done over the last couple years so not all cuts are textbook some require a little thunk...Bob http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/
I've got one of the Axminster swivel saws, picked mine up for £100 inc delivery a couple of months ago. May be worth ringing them and see if they'll repeat/match the offer they had then.
mines a beaten up old Nu-Tools that I got second-hand but it's been OK until recently. I have no idea how old it actually is.
It's started drifting off to the right as it cuts now, I can't get a 'square' cut out of it.
I've had it apart and cleaned it up, swapped the saw guide wheels over as I thought they may be worn on one edge but it only seemed to improve it for a week or so and now it's back as it was.
I had considered upgrading to one of those band-saws that can be used vertically by adding a table.
Does anyone else have one and are they any good please?
