What are these called?

I was given two sets of cast iron bench ends that I want to refurb. They have these fittings which must have been set into the ends of the now long-gone wooden slats.

They are well rusted and painted with Hammerite. I have 48 to get out once I know what the replacements are called. The screws that fix them to the ironwork are pretty mangled but look a bit like crossheads.

My first thought is to drill out the heads with a centre drill but any other advice or tips most welcome.

and crack the cast frames grind the heads off and punch them through

I believe that they are flanged threaded inserts.

As @brightspark has said or two pairs of mole grips should unscrew them.

They are a pain in the ask no questions.

They are a threaded insert, forced into the end grain to secure the wood.

Junk 'em, us decent screws in decent wood.

Grab the course part with mole grips, if possible use a screw driver and undo.
Or a angle grinder.

I hate them with a passion.

The screw heads are in a trough in the casting so I can't easily get in there with a grinder. I could borrow an impact driver but I've never used one so don't know if they are any good at unscrewing stuff.

Be very careful using a BFH anywhere near cast - it's just praying for an excuse to shatter......

C/sink drill in a battery drill? Drill off the head, then...........
