what are my options ... surface rust.

my jagaur x308 has been undersealed at some point and ive gone round peeling it off in the usual rust points to check for hidden issues(i probably shouldnt )
but thankfully i havnt found anything bad.

there is a fair bit of surface rust i need to deal with now before i have to start welding the sort of rusty layer that comes straight off using a wire wheel leaving clean metal.

i want to get the underseal off but i have no idea how to efficiently?

Hot air gun & a scraper is the only way I can think of & lots of getting dirty.

Been reading up on it myself lately, the back and of the van that holds the spare and bumper is impressively ginger,this stuff looks good , the guy that is flogging it makes some interesting points and seems quite honest,saying that even using his stuff you can do it wrong so prep properly.

The visible rust isn't what you should worry about - it's the hidden rust in cavities so concentrate on them first.

A good sharp wood chisel is great for the getting factory under-seal off and a lot easier and less messy than a hot air gun but that will also work.

If its bitumen based and in good order hot air gun is probably best option but hard work

You can finish up the bits left behind with a wire brush in a grinder

but like .. theyre hidden?
im going around with a screwdriver scraping and poking anything i can see and get to and im yet to find anything thats rotten, but 20 year jag its inevitable theres going to be some i havnt found yet.
flakey rust on the subframes and surface to mild rust on the floor pan that ive found so far.

My Disco 2 was undersealed 3 years ago so when I found the rusty inner wings I thought f.....

I attacked the chassis with a tapping stick and a screwdriver but it’s all solid, a little belling out at the very rear but nothing too horrendous. I scrapped of the loose underseal and bought a couple of cans to top it up with

its a clear oily spray they use.

ill clean off as much of the scabby areas as i can and see what they say regarding prep.
i know i will have to eventualy,but id rather not have to weld anything if i can help it

If you have a good pressure washer and one of the high intensity 'rotating' nozzles and big axle stands and somewhere to park the car and good waterproofs then you can shift very loose under-seal.

You will have counted the ands, considered the mess and decided to find some-one else to do it for you.

i do have all of the above, the cruical thing i dont have is the time

I attacked the bottom of my Delta with Aldi twisted wire brushes - wearing ear defenders, breathing mast, goggle AND a face shield. Apart from picking steel bristles out my clothes, and redeposited underseal back off the inside of the garage roof, it worked well.
