What are cylinder taps made out of?

Bear with me...

What are the grey taps on the top of cylinders made from? Like this one;

Reason I ask is that I inherited (yes, let's go with that word) an empty cylinder and I'm thinking of flapdisking it down to bear metal, attaching some kind of plate to that tap and having me a manly side table. But I suspect that my MIG will just melt whatever that tap is made of

I'm guessing aluminium?

Its either aluminium or malleable iron by the look of it.

It'll be either cast aluminium or pot metal I should think.

just remove the tap and bolt the plate in place of the tap

just test with a magnet

Actually, I need to go back out and look at mine as the same point re removing the tap occurred when I spotted the bolt on top of that pic I posted. On the assumption that mine has a similar bolt, then I'll just do that, then.

The stem won't be very strong, I would undo the packing nut and tap a standard metric or imperial (whatever is close to the hole dia) thread to mount onto.

Yeah, but I like the brassness... I'll take it all off and see how to strengthen it / attach the top to it. It only has to be strong enough to hold a bottle of wine, a glass and the Sky remote

remove tap, cut a hole in the plate slot pale onto cylinder and weld on the re insert tap and attach a smaller plate to hold a dish for various nibbles, and it will rotate or use it to hold a lamp
