What angle grinder to get? That is durable

Just out of interest what are people doing with there grinders that makes high wattage desirable?

Being impatient and abusing them for me.

You can push a high wattage grinder a lot harder (in exactly the way you're told you shouldn't) to force it to hog off material if you're in a hurry, before the grinder stalls.

Goes double for using them with cutting disks in thick metal, although I don't need to do that much since I got a cordless portaband.

The M12 Cutoff tool is great for car bodywork, nice and light.

You can't rush it though..

If you're going to buy a grinder then take the time to take it apart and check the grease situation.

This is £18.99 of Ebay's finest current offering. I had a feel and turn of the spinny bits and it felt rather unlubricated.

Undo four screws and you're in. The pinion gear had no grease at all on it. There's a trace on the ring gear but most is sat in a blob, not in contact with anything. Maybe it is supposed to flow over time on to the ring gear if the grinder is sat flat long enough? Photo is poor, sorry. I was kinda pleased to find any grease in there at all to be honest. Gave it a good smear round all the important bits and it sounds and feels a lot better. It will mostly be flung off to the periphery over time regardless.

I can't recommend this as durable, but when you have so many then quantity becomes a quality all of its own and I won't get left stranded.

I blame Roofman for posting the pic of the Dewalt knock off earlier in the thread. Made me start looking again.

My 2p worth. You really want more than one grinder and the more the merrier.

Well I fell for @Hood and his Dewalt Flexvolt suggestion I bought one of THESE. Snag is it really is a monster with up to 2400 Watts of power on tap and LOTS in reserve. You cannot stall this grinder. The snag is it weighs a ton and you couldn't (well I cannot) work with it all day, pull your arms off. I have two of the Lidl 20/40 volt andgle grinders that I paid a tenner each for and to be honest, they have been good. My corded grinders are a couple of Fein offerings and they will just go all day and don't become too hot to use though I just do not like the On/off switches at all. My favourite grinder though is my Dewaly cheapie. Genuine Dewalt but the cheapest one they sell, had it for years now and it is my favourite by far.

Bought one this very morning. The unfortunately titled 750W slim girth model.
As above, added some grease and now enjoying the ergonomics of it.

There's not usually a seal on the pinion gear on the end of the motor. Does the gear oil not leak out?

Iv'e had an AEG for donkeys years now, done a lot of work and never had any problem with it. Think they are german made.

the gearbox will sweat a little bit, I notice dirt sticking to it.
I am only using a small (1/2 teaspoon or so) to liquify the grease a bit.

but the costing of them, i have orderd 2 snide Dewalt grinders...already have bought 2 snide Dewalt 18V leaf blowers for £18 each and i cant fault them.

here are the blowers..i put a downpipe bend on the inlet side as they keep sticking to your trousers, so made the inlet forward facing £18 a pop you cant go wrong.

Ive a couple of the older ones and they have done very very well ,,, but I bought one of their new ones , the one with soft start and the safety start thing , Ive used it about twice , its big and heavy and runs rough ,,,, like a lot of grinders they seem to be going backwards in design.

I think I've only killed grinders cutting flagstones rather than with metal. Softer material and different blades, possibly more draggy making more work for the motor, plus all the dust.

I'm obviously not trying or pushing hard enough on steel.
