Hi guys. I run a very busy alloy wheel refurbishing company in the west midlands and we are looking to get directly involved in Tig welding rims ( we currently outsource cracked rims to an industrial welder and we only offer linishing and grinding solutions to kerb rash). I have tried the 'advertise at the job centre for an experienced welder ' option but they just keep sending me teenagers that have worked for tesco. Firstly does anybody have any better suggestions in terms of where I should be looking for the rarer spotted experienced welder or , failing that , is it realistic to be self taught and able to offer professional standard rim repair. self taught is quite possible. only tuition i had was after i did some codeings ( go figure ) manily to inprove tecnique and get faster

there will be a lot of knacked tungstens and messy welds to start with. they'll get neater.

as for finding people, job ceneter has FAIL written all over it, it had quite a few tig jobs in when i was looking but they were all paying min wage as per pritty much all jobs in there. so usefull people proably arnt going to even bother looking there.

paper proably best bet, you'll want someone local ish and if there looking they'll proably be scouting through the paper as well as the virtualy unlimuted job sites on the net

You would need to be welding alot of rims per week to keep a trained welder fully occupied, does your volume of work justify it ? Considering that a skilled TIG man would command good wages.

Yes in fairness it does now , I've probably postponed this move a little too long not realising how hard it would be to find the right guy . (oops or gal ) .
