West Burton to be site for Nuclear Fusion Reactor

The Government has confirmed West Burton to be the site for the Fusion Reactor https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-63119465.

For the odd one or two who may not know, that's about 30 miles east of Sheffield, though actually in Nottinghamshire. I would probably have bet on the Radcliffe-on-Trent site; wonder what decided it?

Possibly, but it's pretty much in the middle of no where. Relatively accessible from Nottingham, Derby, Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester, at least 3 of which have significant (existing) nuclear involvement.

I used to work in nuclear. The Hartlepool reactor once managed to suck water (partially salty) from the estuary back in to the cooling circuit. I knew quite a few people who made £££££ by going inside to clean out all trace of the salt.

Anyways, you'd have to say that it is good a decision has been made to proceed, and many will think West Burton as good a choice as any, or better! Good time to buy rental property there perhaps?

Fair play to them, to get any project past all the naysayers,nimby`s, planners, ecologists ,greenies and find funding in this country is some achievement That said the construction will probably end up massively over budget,take many years more than expected and be unfit for purpose by the time its built.

Friend of mine was made redundant from the power station at Ratcliffe on Soar a few years back. He used to drive a loader. He's retired now, thought that would be going nuclear. It was odds on it was not going to be anywhere too close to London.

I remember reading (10 years ago?), the UK nuclear plants were being built by the Chinese, and we'd pre agreed to buy energy units at some stupid price, to finance the construction ?

EDF, are still having major issues with their big one in Normandy, which they have to pop back open and redo the welds.

And EDF, are being renationalised by the French government, last time I checked, at a huge cost.

Re Hinkley C, I thought it was a French design (+ components), built with Chinese money and supervised by the Brits? Considering that the Brits (with lots of US input) successfully built the Sizewell B PWR over 30 years ago, this is all pretty sickening.

Am I right in thinking that the French are also building a PWR in Finland which is way behind time and way over cost?

In theory (and probably in practice), the fusion reactor should not be dangerous, so that shouldn't have been an issue in choosing location.
