Went to visit Jim Davey on Friday.

And I came away with this:

I sold my Cebora to make way for a modern welder and thought I'd send Jim a message letting him know I was in the market for a decent used or new machine. Turns out my timing was perfect and this machine had just become available from an upgrading customer so we did a deal and I made a 200 mile round trip to collect it.

I'd like to thank Jim (and his dad) for the time he spent going through just about every aspect of the machine's functions and for setting it up prior to me arriving so I could run some test welds and be completely at ease with the machine. He gave me some great pointers and excellent constructive criticism on my TIG technique (bearing in mind I'm still somewhat of a novice so there was plenty to comment on). I did some test welds and they were miles better than anything I managed to achieve on my transformer machine.

I'm very impressed, not only with the machine I bought but even more with the service I got from Jim and the rest of the shop team. It's hard to find service like this nowadays.

Very nice. Little cool unit as well. Those v205's are nice sets. I've got a spare Brand new water pump for one of those on the selling page. Not that I think you'll need it as they are reliable units. Nicely done pete I look forward to seeing the results on jobs.

I have its baby brother the V160...great machines and looks like you have a nice unit there. Must remind myself to stop picking the Mig up and use more Tig for general welding..

You know what impressed me most (and I hope I don't embarrass Jim saying this)? I sent Jim a brief of what I was looking for either a new or good used machine, what I wanted to do with it, and my budget. Tending to be a little cynical towards any vendor I fully expected to be offered a machine either right at the top or just over my budget allowance but instead of hitting me with that he offered me this machine based on what my usage criteria were rather than cost and it came WELL inside the budget I had put to him. What it meant for me was I had hundreds left over to buy stuff I wanted but couldn't justify spending on and of course that business went to RH Davey too so I came away with a very nice welding helmet 5 kilos of filler and small pile of other consumables AND I don't have to budget for gas either now as I still have cash left over for Argon.

Those units have been about for many years unchanged as far as I know yet they will keep up with anything new thrown at the market today. I believe selco make them for Lincoln electric afaik.

I have the same set only minus the water cooler, I was looking to spend around £600 on my first tig set but after doing my homework I realised I wanted a better set. After plenty of searching I found mine for £1600 12 months old and it has been used every week since.

Tbh I'm not sure either. I've never used one but seen lots of them and the bigger ones used heavily in industry. They were about around the same time the magicwaves 2200 came out and like the magicwaves they are still about relatively unchanged. Gotta be over 15 years now. I seem to remember a post from Hotrodder saying he's had his along time and dropped it yet it's still kicks out a quality run. Says it all really. Good units whoever produced them.

I have to say it suprised me how good this was. To be fair I'm a better TIG welder now than I was back when we were selling these new but it gives a modern EWM a run for its money on arc quality. Ok, it won't have the duty cycle or the special arc controls of a top of the line modern set but I was pleasantly suprised having not run one for years, I'm sure it will be more than capable of doing anything Peter wants to tackle over the next few years.
