welding??

hi guys i am new to welding and just bought a kende 150 mig welder
gas/no gas i have been using it with gassless wire i have welsing a few diffrent types of metal but sometimes having trouble getting the two too bond im just getting a pool of steel on the parent metal and no penetration on the metal being welded also how do you now when you have got a good well that will withstan a good hammer blow and how to you achieve one

start just welding on a single sheet rather than joining straight away...
