Welding zinc plated items

Is there any special precautions to take before (arc) welding some that's zinc plated

Fume protection is the most important thing. You get really nasty fumes from galvanised etc. Weld it outdoors if you can & wear some form of fume mask.

you can get the shivers, i heard about a guy who has to have his eye balls popped out every 6 weeks and have something done to them because he used to well galvinised with poor ventilation.

just checked out your site, thats some mother of a welder, i have a miller 304 xmt, i'm sure it will be still going in 20 years time.

I hate that anvilfire site, and people's knee-jerk reactions to it.. It's the most unhelpful health and safety advice. It's about someone who poured thick poison smoke into their lungs, and died as a result. It bears no relation to the normal welding of galv whatsoever. Galv isn't good for you for sure, but getting on a bus isn't the same as being run over by one either.

i think the eye ball story is a shop floor myth, although the guy who told me the story swears its true, have wanted to comment on richjmaynard's setup for a while though, it massive.
