Just been watching a video from Miller,I was suprised that the intructor advised to remove the Nozzle or Shroud when NOT using gas and using Flux cored wire and just use the tip. Anybody out there tried this?. The video is on the internet for all to see.

If not using gas then shroud or no shroud shouldn't make any difference other than the shroud is insulated from the contact tip so for those with a less than steady hand using a shroud would stop you arcing the tip against the workpiece.
One benefit would be no buildup of spatter to worry about.
There was a picture around somewhere of something like a lincoln gas/nogas mig that came with a rubber cover that was put over the tip when using it in gasless mode. (With the shroud removed)

I bought the lincoln one and put it on my welder,a harbor freight gas-less 90 amp,had to grind out the center to make it fit but work's great, don't have to worry about splatter getting into the gas diffuser.
I just completed trailer learn to weld project, welded outside with a Texas breeze most of the time. Found flux-core worked great in breeze, it blows smoke away from weld. also no shroud helps ability to see puddle.
