welding trailer

Hi, have a jockey wheel bolted to my trailer, is bolted to box section and if I get the bolts tight it crushes the box section. Is it ok to weld the jockey wheek mount on? Its right by the tow ball, is it going to give me cracking or strengh issues due to the heat?

If the box is that weak, it's be better to weld in crush tubes, and/or reinforce the box. welding the jockey wheel mount on is likely just papering over the cracks.

Plus if you ever need to remove the jockey wheel mounting you'll have to grind the weld off.

I wouldn't say the box section is weak, its around 3mm. The jockey wheel is cheap and the mount face is not completly flat and when bolted up you can move it side to side. When you have weight on the wheel it sits at an angle and I don't want it to twist the box section. What about to small welds top and bottom, around 10 mm long just to stop it moving, easy to grind off if I ever need to remove the mount$

How about welding a stronger bracket to the trailer and bolting the jockey wheel to that?

i found on mine it twisted the face but i was C section so a bit differnet. the jocky wheel will work best if its in line with the ball instead of to one side on my newer trailer the jocky wheel hole is cast in the head but it gets in the way of the handbrake sometimes
